The Society has the pleasure to announce that Professor Jane Martin (University of Birmingham) has won the 2023 SES Book Award for Gender and Education in England since 1770: a social and cultural history (Springer, 2022).
Jane was presented with a plaque commemorating her Award by Prof. Stephen Parker at the SES Fellows’ Dinner on 17 November 2023.
The title was reviewed in the British Journal of Educational Studies by Tanya Fitzgerald (University of Western Australia) in 2023, with Fitzgerald writing:
Jane Martin’s latest book, Gender and Education in England since 1770: a social and cultural history is a significant contribution to the field. It tackles key questions, offers critical interpretations of ways in which gender, culture, and power are interwoven and takes forward the importance of biography, prosopography, and historical ethnography. From the outset, Jane seeks to uncover, and recover ways in which individual lives and social structures intersect.
This book challenged me to think more deeply about historical ethnography and how I might respond both theoretically and methodologically in my own work.
Over 20+ titles were considered by the Book Awards committee this year, including titles from publishers such as Routledge, Sage, Cambridge University Press, Manchester University Press, Polity Press.
The Awards will reopen in January 2024 for nominations for the 2024 Book Award.
