SES Distinguished Seminar Series

The SES has launched a Distinguished Seminar Series to celebrate the work of leading academics who have made a significant contribution to the field of Education Studies.

The inaugural Seminar took place on 7th May 2026, celebrating the exceptional work and contribution to citizenship of Professor Ian Davies, Fellow of SES. A full day of tributes and rich discussion included presentations by Professor James Arthur, Professor Alistair Ross, Professor Beatrice Szepek, Dr Edda Sant and Professor Andrew Peterson. Video messages were shown from Professor Marta Fulop, Hungary, Dr Eric Chong, HK, and Dr Mitsuharu Mizuyama, Japan.

The day was followed by a fine dinner at Heslington Hall. Ian’s family, friends, colleagues and members of the SES Executive Board had the pleasure of toasting a fine mind and a much loved and respected colleague.

Ian is Professor Emeritus at the University of York, where he sent much of his distinguished career as both a student and academic. At York, Ian was Chair of the Board of Studies, founded the Graduate School of Education, was Deputy Head of the Department of Education and Leader of the Centre for Research on Social Justice and Education. As well as being principal investigator on major research awards from the Canadian government, UK government, Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and Leverhulme Trust, Ian has authored, co-authored or edited 17 books and published about 200 articles in peer reviewed journals with translations into several languages.

As well as being a Fellow of SES, he is a Fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science.
